Before You Arrive
A little preparation makes the difference between a rushed stop and a genuinely memorable half-day.
Wear sturdy footwear — some areas have uneven and steep surfaces. Layer up: the Firth of Forth creates its own microclimate and temperatures on the ramparts can differ significantly from the car park. Bring a wide-angle lens if you photograph architecture.
Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours for the castle itself, plus extra time for the shoreline walk and village. Morning visits benefit from softer light on the stone surfaces. Arriving at opening avoids the midday peak on busy summer days.
Dogs are welcome on a lead throughout the castle and grounds. Under-7s enter free. For families with young children, focus activity goals on spotting the ship shape, finding gun ports, and walking the pier area — the compact layout keeps everyone engaged.
